  3. In response to ABCD Desi:

FROM off a hill whose concave womb reworded
A plaintful story from a sistering vale,
My spirits to attend this double voice accorded,
    And down I laid to list the sad-tuned tale;
Ere long espied a fickle maid full pale,
Tearing of papers, breaking rings a-twain,
Storming her world with sorrow’s wind and rain.

Would you hold the same “criticism” you express in the comments, for the verse above? Specifically, as you wrote: “this kind of poem puts me really in a complete darkness….Why can’t the poem be simple and sweet so that one can understand without much of brainstorming, or without much of the heart-storming??”

All poems are words of expression/s. Why does a poet (or anyone for that matter) have to use “simple…sweet” words alone? Use of words in a language–and how these are strung together make the same expression beautiful for one and the same can utter a “huh?” response from another. Everything you said may also be said by someone for the verse above. The poet? William Shakespeare! And the expression is in the same vein as that in I.e., a lover’s complaint.

I think it is important to clearly distinguish not being able to understand the words and/or meanings from the difficulty or critique (if any, of) actual poem itself. And there have been many poems/poets, indeed one I can think of by R. Parekh that are difficult. But it would be unfair to criticise a poem because simple words are woven such, that they are employed to convey a deeper thought or emotion.
Simplicty in words, but “complexity” in understanding the words-put-together!. I think that is the beauty of many of ર. પા.’s poems.

It took me a while to “get” the poet. But after reading several of his poems (along with what others thought about each), I realized how much I enjoy reading them. I find many comments (e.g. by Urmi, Vivek Tailor and several others) very helpful in figuring out either the creation or the poet. Hope that the comments above helped you understand the poem. You said you are new to the “Gujarati poetry world”. So a hearty, warm welcome to the world of poetry, Gujarati or otherwise.

  8. Hello:
I would like to ask the owner of this site a question: Did you really understand this poem? What was your objective when you posted this poem? You must have something in mind when you posted this poem, otherwice you would not post this just for the sake of it. Why don’t you write something about it so that we can understand at least a word of it?

I am new to this Gujarati poetry world, I want to develop an interest in it…but this kind of poem puts me really in a complete darkness. This poem talks about “કાળાંડિબાણ એવું સૂરજ વિનાનું સાવ ગામ”, and by reading it I also became complete dark….Please, I want to understand the good thought or good feeling of the poem, but it is very hard to me.

Why can’t the poem be simple and sweet so that one can understand without much of brainstorming, or without much of the heart-storming?? I literally read this poem many times, spent a lot of time, but nothing doing!

I understand that poem is an expression of poet’s feeling, but feeling is such a simple thing created by God that everyone can understand a feeling. If feeling can not be u nderstood, it is NOT a feeling. And the expression of feeling should also be in a simple way. If feeling is simple and sweet but the expression is complicated, there is no meaning of it. If a girl wants to say I love you to a boy, and if she writes a complicated puzzle of 5 pages and asks the boy to find out the meaning in it, …and the boy spends hours and hours finding out the message of it, and the girl is really enjoying boy’s difficulty, you tell me, is it called a feeling? Is it called an expression? But instead if she says, “What wind whispers in the ears of mountains, what rain tells the greenary of the forest, what Sun by kissing horizon tells the earth, I want to tell you the same thing!!”…This is a simple yet sweet feeling and expression…This is called poetry, I think!

Do not misunderstand me, I want to understand this poem and get something good out of it…but I failed in getting any meaning of it, or getting any feeling out of it…
